GOAL: Committed to poverty eradication through the empowerment of the poor

Agriculture

In 2005, a tissue culture lab was built to produce disease-free plants that would be larger, healthier and more nutritious. Currently, disease-free potato plants are yielding crops 3 times greater than the original plants. The seeds from these plants are given to the poor to use in creating small businesses and to nourish their own families.

Bangladesh has incredibly fertile soil, but because it is washed away two to four times a year by the monsoons, crops must be planted and harvested in very short cycles. Agriculture provides nutrition and income for millions of Bangladeshis.

In order for marginal and small farmers to be successful, they need technical assistance and training to learn which crops to plant each season, when to plant, how to fertilize and irrigate, and control pests and weeds. The PSDI Model provides experts to teach these skills, as well as timely and sufficient amounts of credit, high quality seeds and seedlings, water, superior fertilizers and pesticides where needed.
