GOAL: Committed to poverty eradication through the empowerment of the poor

Primary Schools

Traditionally, poor rural children are not educated in rural Bangladesh. Introducing these children and their parents to the benefits of education changes their future and the future of their country.

Overwhelming poverty and the need for all family members to work means many rural poor children are not educated. To include these children in the educational process that will provide opportunities for a better life, the PSDI model has developed a highly effective community partnership augmenting a basic government curriculum with singing, dancing and cultural classes. Workbooks are published for students and teachers and all supplies are provided. Four-hour classes are held year round, six days a week, and alternate between early and late morning starting times, depending on the weather, planting or harvesting of crops when the children are needed in the fields.

80,000 children have completed the first two years of primary school since 1996.

The introduction of education in a collaborative and enthusiastic environment has sent the message that learning is important, as well as fun, and has had a positive effect on both attendance and performance. After completing the first two years, 85% of the children are enrolled in the free government public schools where they tend to be almost a year ahead of their government school peers. Currently 2,010 students are enrolled.
